The Vermillion River starts as two creeks in Ford County and deepens as it rolls through Pontiac and Matthiessen State Park. It empties into the Illionois River near La Salle/Peru.

For a family-friendly atmosphere, Streator has a few parks that are well maintained. A nearby park is Starved Rock, which is a great place for hiking and nature walks.
