The Hegeler family had several children and built the Hegeler Carus Mansion in the mid-19th century. Hegeler and Mary Hegeler were very wealthy and built a beautiful home with their money. They had ten children, and eight of them lived in the mansion. Mary Hegeler was one of the most successful of the children, and she helped her father run the smelting plant. She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Michigan with a degree in engineering and to study at the School of Mines in Freiberg, Germany.
