In 1977 Dale Smith launched into a slalom run and never completed the course. After crashing halfway his body was so mangled that many colleagues never thought he would recover. Thankfully Smith did and after his calamitous episode began designing his own brand of safety equipment. It's a shame that the invention of Smiths Scabs had to come from such a gory incident but if it didn't then a lot of pro riders and amateurs alike would have suffered similar fates! Smith started out by making re-caps for other popular brands in 1984 and these were innovative as they featured an extended section that offered protection for the actual pad too. Smith had bright ideas and began designing his own pads using materials such as foam and neoprene as they had better memory and any impact would allow the pad to rebound back to its original shape unlike plastic. These Smith Scab designs became so popular and successful that the majority of half pipe skaters, such as Tony Hawks, began using them. Smiths' vision did not stop there and he now has a full line of knee, elbow and helmet gear and in the process has become one of the most important brands in high-octane sports for safety. Smiths scabs-protecting extreme sports since 1977. The famous Smith scabs products are now available in a variety of different styles and prices. Smith Scabs knee pads are so rugged that although they are originally designed for extreme skating in ramps and pools, they have been adopted into the brutal sport of Roller Derby. Smith Scabs kneepads come with a standard adjustable back design using Velcro for ease and comfort whilst wearing them. The smith caps, as tradition dictates, are made of extremely slow memory absorbent foam which will easily handle any impact giving the user maximum confidence whilst going into a bowl, ramp or roller derby ring.
